Solids and water are pumped in under pressure, creating a swirling motion inside the cyclone cylinder which throws the solids to the outside of the cylinder by centrifugal force. The larger particles move downwards under gravity and leave via the bottom outlet with a small quantity of water. A small amount of the fine solids remains near the centre of the cyclone with most of the water; this then spirals upwards around an air core and is removed via a central pipe (the vortex finder) and out the top overflow.
